어느 영화인지 기억은 가물가물한데 Styx에 대한 대사가 있었습니다. 차에서 Styx노래를 틀어놓고 친구에게 Styx가 왜 훌륭한지에 대해 열띠게 설명을 늘어놓았죠. 이렇게 훌륭한 밴드가 왜 다른 수퍼밴드만큼 대우를 받지 못하는지 울분을 토하고 역사상 가장 저평가된 밴드라고 열변을 또한 토해냅니다.
ㅎㅎ 저 역시도 공감합니다. 이들의 곡을 몇개 들어보면 바로 드러나죠. 곡들이 듣기도 괜찮을뿐만 아니라 심오하기까지 합니다. 그런데도 이정도 취급을 받고 있었다는 것은 조금 억울할 법도 합니다만 많은 사람들이 이들에 대해 재평가하고 있으니 아직까지도 활동중인 이들에겐 정말 힘이 날겁니다.
2005년 라스베가스에 출장을 갔을때 제가 묵었던 알라딘 호텔에 Styx벽보가 붙어있길래 자세히 살펴보니 그 호텔 지하에서 Styx의 라이브 공연이 열린다는 포스터였습니다. 저는 대경실색을 하고 날짜를 살펴보니 제가 라스베가스를 떠난 후 2-3일 있다가 공연이 시작되더군요.
속으로 한탄을 금할 수 없었지만 어쩔수 없었죠.
그들은 60년대부터 활동을 시작했고 70년에 Styx로 그룹명칭을 고칩니다. Styx는 그리스 신화에 나오는 지하의 죽음의 지대를 가로지르는 강이름이죠.
수십장의 앨범이 나와있고 지금까지도 활동하는 밴드입니다. 조금 더 있으면 밴드결성 40주년을 맞겠네요.
오늘 세곡을 선곡해 봤습니다. 이들의 대표곡이라 할 수 있는 Come Sail Away와 Renegade 그리고 최근 제가 좋아하고 자주 듣는 Mr. Roboto입니다. 혹시 Styx에 관심이 생긴다면 위의 Greatest Hits정도만 구매하셔도 Styx의 주요 히트곡들을 두루 감상하실 수 있겠습니다.
지금 들으시는 세곡도 모두 이 앨범에 들어있습니다.
들어보시면 느끼겠지만 일반 하드록 사운드에서 약간 비켜나 있습니다. 프로그레시브 그룹같은 느낌이죠. 미국밴드인데도 말입니다. 그도 그럴것이 AMG의 자료를 보면 이들이 EL&P나 무디블루스의 영향을 강하게 받았다고 합니다. 그래서인지 미국의 시카고출신의 밴드임에도 불구하고 한창때의 브리티시 밴드를 연상시킵니다. 키보드 연주도 그렇구요 ^^

대중적인 입맛 그러니까 세계적으로 먹힐만한 팝적인 곡들을 제외하곤
국내의 입맛엔 상당히 맞지 않는 편입니다.
프로그레시브 성향에 한정짓는다고 해도 말이죠.
묘한 아메리카 빠다 냄새가 난달까요.
개인적으로 저도 좋아하는 밴드이긴 하지만,
저로서도 전체를 놓고 본다면 곡과 곡들이 양 극단을 달리는 재밌는 밴드입니다.
ㅎㅎ 동의합니다. 이 친구들 꽤 괜찮긴한데 약간 묘한 구석이 있어요. ^^
